Understanding Permissions

Learn how permissions control what information you can see.

Church Directory Plus uses a role-based permission system to control who can see what information. This protects member privacy while allowing appropriate access.

How Permissions Work

Your church administrator assigns you one or more roles. Each role includes specific permissions that determine:

  • Which members you can see (members only vs. everyone)
  • What contact information is visible (address, birthday, etc.)
  • What actions you can take (edit profiles, manage groups, etc.)

Common View Permissions

Permission What You Can See
view_active_users View active church members (basic info)
view_directory_all_people View everyone, including non-members and children
view_user_address View home address
view_user_birthday View full birthday (day, month, and year)
view_user_birthday_day View birthday day and month only (no year)
view_user_family_info View spouse, children, and family status
view_user_employment_info View employer, job title, and experience
view_full_user_info View all information including notes, roles, and dates

Your Own Profile

You can always see your complete own profile, regardless of your permissions. This allows you to verify your information is correct.

Birthday Privacy

Birthday visibility has special privacy controls:

  • Members can choose to hide their birthday from others
  • Members can choose to hide their birth year (showing only day/month)
  • Users with view_user_birthday permission can see full birthdays regardless of privacy settings
  • Users with only view_user_birthday_day respect the member's privacy preferences
Note: If you need access to additional information, contact your church administrator to request the appropriate permissions.
